About Us

We are pleased to announce the formation of the Barbados Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Association (BUAVA). Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are also referred to as Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Remote Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) or Drones.

The BUAVA is a non-profit association comprising of recreational and commercial UAV operators who endeavour to be responsible pilots that uphold the objectives of the Association.

The primary objectives of the BUAVA are:

  • To serve as the premier advocacy and support group for UAV operators in Barbados
  • To promote safety and discipline in the UAV community
  • To engage and educate the public about UAV operations on the island
  • To consult with the local authorities, and assist with the implementation of a legal framework for UAV operations

The BUAVA is guided by a constitution and has established operational safety guidelines for our members. In addition, we have also developed an instant notification system to alert UAV operators of NOTAMs (Notices To Airmen) and TFRs (Temporary Flight Restrictions) issued by the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority), directly via SMS text messages, and are currently in discussions with two major insurance brokers who are working with us to develop bespoke liability policies for commercial UAV operation.

UAVs have the potential to be used in Barbados for numerous positive commercial activities, which can provide employment for persons in many sectors of the economy. We believe that the efforts of our organization will lead to a vibrant industry, with the potential to have a huge positive impact on our economy, and position Barbados as a leader in this area of technology.
